we give because
heaven not earth is my home
We give because
god owns it all
We give because
god gave first
We Give Because God Gave First
“Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” 2 Corinthians 9:7
Gratitude and Giving
“It’s no surprise that generosity can inspire gratitude,” Kira Newman writes in an article for Greater Good Magazine. “But what’s less obvious is how gratitude can inspire generosity. Grateful people have been shown to be more helpful, kind, supportive, and altruistic.” She quotes pioneering gratitude researcher Robert Emmons as saying, “Gratitude is more than a pleasant feeling; it is also motivating. Gratitude serves as a key link between receiving and giving: It moves recipients to share and increase the very good they have received.”
Those of us whose hearts have been captured by Jesus Christ, of course, know all about this link between receiving and giving. We who have received so much—forgiveness for our sins, a new nature, eternal life, and adoption into God’s family just for starters—are motivated more and more to share the bounty we have received. For us, this is not a dismal chore of obligation but a blessed opportunity to share God’s love with others.
The Apostle Paul spoke of the compelling example of the Lord Jesus when encouraging the Corinthian church—and us—to share financially. “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,” Paul said, “that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.”
A generous gratitude from hearts captured by such grace is our joyful (and only possible) response.
